The administration of Chandigarh is installing around 300 cameras on different light points and areas to get the Live traffic view. There are 287 junctions that will include around 2000 cameras by the end of December.
For the time being, data collection is being done with these installed cameras till December 31. The project of installation of cameras is undertaken by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) in which around 300 cameras are installed and are working by giving Live footage of different locations such as Centra Mall, Transport light point, Tribune Chowk, Gurudwara light point sector 20, and Faida barrier.
At present, the server of this project is based at Panchkula managing all the data from different places. The server will operate from the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) sector 17 which is under construction at present.
As per an official, “these cameras are embedded with various facilities that can detect and catch all kinds of traffic violations such as, Over-speeding vehicles, jumping red lights, not wearing a face mask or seat belt, talking over the phone while driving, and zebra crossing”.
At an event named “Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav”, MC Commissioner Anindita Mitra said, “the prime motto of this event is to get independence from all types of crimes and traffic violations. To achieve that, these cameras will help in a big way”.
The hi-tech cameras exempt vehicles like ambulances or other emergency service provider vehicles. Otherwise, every traffic violator’s vehicle will be recorded and saved in a folder. So, instead of checking and tracking at the light points to catch the traffic violators, police can issue challan to the vehicles straight forward.
The real-time surveillance with cameras can make the city including government hospitals, parking spaces, community centres, waterworks, parks, gardens safer and crime-free. The total count of such locations is around 290.
