Language of Chandigarh – Everything You Need To Know About

Chandigarh, the City Beautiful is one of the most popular cities in India. People from adjoining states come and live here. Some people come for study purposes, some come to work while others prefer to settle down here. Everyone has their own purpose of living. 

Chandigarh is made out of Punjab and is the capital of Punjab and Haryana. Not from these two states but people from Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are also coming over here. Many are well-settled on this land. 

While talking about the language of Chandigarh, you can find numerous people speaking various languages including Hindi, Punjabi, English, Pahadi, Urdu, Haryanvi and many more. 

As the land of Chandigarh belongs to Punjab, most of the people, therefore, used to speak the Punjabi language while communicating with each other. As per the data available online, in 1981, the number of Punjabi speakers was more than the other language speakers. But with the change in the trend, people are more inclined towards Hindi. As per data, almost 73 % of the total population speak Hindi whereas Punjabi which was the Chandigarh language has now declined to 22 % as per the 2011 data. 

The language spoken in Chandigarh nowadays is a blend of English with Hindi or Punjabi. Punglish or Hinglish is the new norm that people use while communicating with each other. This trend is quite popular in chatting and even while exchanging emails. 

Many people ask what is the official language of Chandigarh; well the official language of CHD is English. All the administration work or judiciary work in English language only.
