History of Chandigarh – The City Beautiful

Chandigarh is a city, union territory and capital of two states namely Punjab and Haryana. It got its name from the famous Chandi Mandir. ‘Chandi’ the Goddess of Power and ‘Garh’ means place, which unites to make Chandigarh. It is known as the happiest and the cleanest city in India claimed by various surveys conducted in recent years. Who Invented Chandigarh?

Many people search on the Internet about who is the founder of Chandigarh. However, the idea of a new city was brought in by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. But the person who planned this beautiful city was a French Architect ‘Le Corbusier’. Construction began in the early 1950s and was completed in the late 1960s. Le Corbusier worked from 1951 till his death in 1965 for the construction of this city after that M.N. Sharma took over the charges.

When and by whom was Chandigarh City Inaugurated?

Chandigarh city was inaugurated on 7th October 1953 by President Rajendra Prasad. It was then placed out of the administrative control of both Haryana and Punjab and under the direct charge of the Central Government as a Union Territory of India.

How Many Sectors are there in Chandigarh?

Initially, the City Beautiful was divided into a grid of 30 sectors in the Phase-l plan while the Phase-ll layout included Sectors 31 to 47. Each sector of the city is designed with its own shopping area, academic space, health care buildings, community centers and place of worship. Each sector also has its own open parking space, parks and residential area.

Why is Chandigarh the Capital of Two States?

In 1966, a new state was formed named Haryana, in some Hindi speaking parts of Punjab. Somehow, Chandigarh remained the capital of this new state and still, it is today. Chandigarh serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. However, there is always a demand from Punjab to include Chandigarh in Punjab and assign a different city as the capital of Haryana.
